As a philosophy student, I approach this topic through the lens of ethical theories, exploring how frameworks such as deontology, utilitarianism, and virtue ethics can guide voters to evaluate candidates critically and avoid deception. This essay will outline key ethical criteria, analyse their application in the Peruvian context, and discuss their limitations, aiming to foster informed democratic participation. By doing so, it demonstrates a sound understanding of philosophical ethics while considering real-world political challenges.

Applied to elections, this suggests voters should prioritise candidates who uphold honesty as an absolute duty, rejecting those who manipulate facts for electoral advantage. In Peru, where corruption perceptions remain high—with the country scoring 33 out of 100 on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (Transparency International, 2023)—such a criterion is crucial. However, this approach has limitations; it may overlook contextual nuances, such as when partial truths serve a greater good, highlighting the need for a balanced ethical toolkit.
Furthermore, the metaphor underscores the risk of being “deceived,” akin to sailors leading ships astray. A critical philosophical perspective, informed by thinkers like John Stuart Mill, introduces utilitarianism, which evaluates actions based on their consequences for overall happiness (Mill, 1863).
