Politeness, typically a social norm in human exchanges, may seem misplaced when directed at machines, yet research suggests it influences user behaviour and system efficacy. The discussion will examine the nature of AI interactions, potential benefits and drawbacks of politeness, and broader ethical implications. Ultimately, this essay argues that while politeness is not obligatory, it can enhance user experience and promote positive societal norms, though it risks anthropomorphising AI in unhelpful ways. By analysing these aspects, the essay aims to provide a balanced view for technology students navigating this emerging domain.
The Nature of AI and Human Interaction
Understanding the foundational aspects of AI like ChatGPT is essential to addressing the politeness debate. ChatGPT operates on advanced machine learning algorithms, processing vast datasets to generate responses that mimic human language (Brown et al., 2020). However, it lacks consciousness, emotions, or genuine understanding, functioning purely as a predictive tool based on patterns in data (Marcus, 2022). This distinction is crucial because politeness in human contexts serves social functions, such as building rapport or avoiding conflict, which do not directly apply to non-sentient entities.
From an HCI perspective, humans often treat computers as social actors, a phenomenon documented in early studies. For instance, Reeves and Nass (1996) demonstrated through experiments that people apply social rules to media and technology, such as reciprocity and politeness, even when aware of the artificial nature. In one study, participants who received polite feedback from a computer reciprocated with more positive evaluations, suggesting an instinctive anthropomorphism (Reeves and Nass, 1996). Research indicates that polite queries can lead to more refined responses from AI, as language models are trained on diverse human dialogues that include courteous exchanges (Fogg, 2003). For example, phrasing a request politely—such as “Could you please explain quantum computing?”—might elicit a more structured and helpful reply compared to a blunt demand, due to the model’s probabilistic response generation (Brown et al., 2020).
Furthermore, politeness can foster better habits in users. In educational settings, where undergraduates might use ChatGPT for research or drafting, maintaining courteous language encourages clear communication skills. A study by Hill et al. (2015) on human-AI collaboration found that users who treated AI assistants respectfully reported higher satisfaction and perceived the interactions as more collaborative. Arguments Against Being Polite to AI
Conversely, there are valid counterarguments suggesting that politeness towards ChatGPT is unnecessary or even counterproductive. Primarily, since AI lacks emotions, expending effort on courteous language could be seen as inefficient. Marcus (2022) argues that over-anthropomorphising AI distracts from its mechanical reality, potentially leading users to attribute undue agency or intelligence to the system. For instance, if students treat ChatGPT as a “friend” deserving politeness, they might overlook its limitations, such as generating inaccurate information, known as hallucinations (Ji et al., 2023).
