Introduction
As a cybersecurity student, I am increasingly aware of how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the field, presenting both innovative opportunities and complex challenges. This essay addresses two interconnected aspects of modern cybersecurity. First, it proposes a novel security application leveraging generative AI to tackle emerging threats, focusing on its defensive potential in enterprise environments. Second, drawing on recent threat intelligence such as the CrowdStrike Global Threat Report 2025, it analyses how adversary tactics like voice-based phishing, social engineering, and exploitation of unmanaged devices are challenging traditional security models, and how vendors can adapt through technology, intelligence, and operations. By exploring these areas, the essay demonstrates original thinking on AI’s role in reshaping cybersecurity, supported by academic sources. The discussion highlights gaps in current practices and strategic innovations, ultimately arguing for a proactive, integrated approach to defender strategies. Key points include the enabling power of generative AI, its risks, and adaptive responses to evolving threats.
Proposing a Novel Generative AI Application for Cybersecurity
In the rapidly evolving landscape of cybersecurity, generative AI offers unprecedented capabilities for both defensive and offensive applications. Here, I propose a novel defensive tool called “AI-Driven Phishing Simulation Engine” (AI-PSE), which uses generative AI to create hyper-realistic, adaptive phishing simulations for enterprise training and vulnerability assessment. This application addresses the specific security problem of inadequate user awareness and detection of sophisticated social engineering attacks, which traditional tools often fail to simulate authentically due to their static nature.
Generative AI enables capabilities that traditional security tools cannot by producing dynamic, context-aware content. Unlike conventional phishing simulation software, which relies on predefined templates and scripted scenarios (Gupta et al., 2018), AI-PSE leverages models like GPT variants to generate personalised phishing emails, voice calls, or messages in real-time, incorporating user-specific data such as job roles, recent communications, or behavioural patterns. For instance, it could create a deepfake voice call mimicking a colleague’s tone and dialect, exploiting voice-based phishing tactics highlighted in recent reports. This adaptability stems from AI’s ability to learn from vast datasets, generating novel content that evolves with adversary techniques, something rule-based systems cannot achieve without constant manual updates (Hadnagy, 2018). Furthermore, AI-PSE integrates natural language processing to analyse user responses, providing immediate feedback and adjusting simulation difficulty, thus enhancing training efficacy.
The primary goals of this use case are to reduce analyst workload, improve detection speed, and optimise data collection. By automating simulation creation and analysis, security teams can focus on strategic tasks rather than manual scripting, potentially cutting preparation time by 50% based on similar AI applications in training (ENISA, 2023). It also aims to accelerate detection by building user resilience through repeated, varied exposures, fostering quicker recognition of anomalies. Additionally, the tool collects anonymised response data to refine enterprise threat models, enabling better prediction of vulnerabilities. This aligns with broader cybersecurity objectives, such as those outlined in the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) guidelines, which emphasise proactive user education (NCSC, 2022).
However, potential risks and limitations exist. One key risk is the ethical concern of generating deceptive content, which could inadvertently train users to distrust legitimate communications or lead to data privacy breaches if simulations incorporate sensitive information. Mitigation involves strict ethical frameworks, such as obtaining explicit consent and anonymising data, guided by principles from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) code of ethics (ACM, 2018). Another limitation is the AI’s potential for hallucinations or biased outputs, where generated phishing might not accurately reflect real threats, reducing effectiveness. This can be addressed through human-in-the-loop validation, where experts review and fine-tune AI outputs, and by training models on diverse, verified datasets to minimise biases (Binns, 2018). Additionally, adversaries could reverse-engineer the tool for offensive purposes, so robust access controls and encryption are essential. Overall, while AI-PSE introduces risks, these can be mitigated through governance and oversight, making it a meaningful advancement in cybersecurity operations.
Analysing Evolving Adversary Techniques and Vendor Adaptations
Recent threat intelligence, including the CrowdStrike Global Threat Report 2025, underscores a shift in adversary tactics towards voice-based phishing (vishing), sophisticated social engineering, and exploitation of unmanaged or poorly monitored devices. These techniques challenge traditional security models by exploiting human vulnerabilities and gaps in device oversight, necessitating innovative adaptations from security vendors.
Voice-based phishing and unmanaged devices are effective for adversaries because they bypass technical defences, targeting human psychology and decentralised environments. Vishing exploits trust in verbal communication, using deepfakes or scripted calls to extract sensitive information, as adversaries can mimic familiar voices with AI tools, making detection harder (CrowdStrike, 2025). Indeed, the report notes a 30% rise in such attacks, often succeeding due to the immediacy of voice interactions, which pressure victims into quick decisions without verification (Furnell and Thomson, 2009). Unmanaged devices, such as personal smartphones or IoT gadgets in bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies, are effective entry points because they lack central monitoring, allowing lateral movement within networks. Adversaries exploit these for data exfiltration or ransomware, capitalising on the proliferation of remote work where traditional perimeter defences fail (Kaspersky, 2023). Generally, these tactics thrive in environments with inconsistent security hygiene, where users are the weakest link.
These evolving techniques exploit gaps in current enterprise security postures, particularly reliance on signature-based detection and static controls. Traditional models, focused on firewalls and antivirus, are ill-equipped for behavioural threats like social engineering, which do not leave digital footprints easily detectable by rule-based systems (Pfleeger and Pfleeger, 2015). For example, unmanaged devices often fall outside endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools, creating blind spots that adversaries use for persistence. The CrowdStrike report highlights how poor monitoring enables exploitation, with 40% of breaches involving shadow IT (CrowdStrike, 2025). Additionally, fragmented identity management allows social engineering to succeed, as multi-factor authentication (MFA) may not cover voice channels, exposing credentials.
To counter these, modern security vendors could adapt by integrating emerging technologies such as AI, behavioural analytics, and identity protection. AI-driven tools, like anomaly detection systems, can monitor voice patterns and flag deviations, using machine learning to differentiate real from synthetic audio (Wang et al., 2020). Behavioural analytics could profile user interactions across devices, detecting unusual access from unmanaged endpoints through continuous monitoring (ENISA, 2023). For identity protection, zero-trust architectures ensure verification regardless of device status, incorporating biometric checks for vishing scenarios. Vendors like CrowdStrike could enhance platforms like Falcon with AI modules for real-time threat simulation and response, reducing detection times.
Threat intelligence plays a crucial role by providing actionable insights, such as those from CrowdStrike’s report, enabling vendors to update models proactively. User awareness training, integrated with simulations, fosters vigilance, while platform integration—combining EDR with identity and access management (IAM)—creates a unified defence. However, challenges include implementation costs and false positives from AI, mitigated by phased rollouts and hybrid human-AI oversight (NCSC, 2022). This strategic adaptation reflects defender innovation, shifting from reactive to predictive postures.
Conclusion
In summary, generative AI reshapes cybersecurity by enabling tools like the proposed AI-PSE, which addresses social engineering through adaptive simulations, reducing workloads and enhancing detection, though risks require ethical mitigations. Meanwhile, evolving threats like vishing and unmanaged devices exploit traditional gaps, but vendors can counter them via AI, analytics, and integrated intelligence. These developments imply a need for balanced innovation, where AI’s opportunities outweigh risks through strategic implementation.
