However, this integration raises significant ethical controversies, including job displacement, privacy concerns, and algorithmic bias. As a student studying business ethics, this essay explores these issues, drawing on ethical theories such as utilitarianism and deontology, and applies an ethical decision-making model to navigate them. The purpose is to critically examine the ethical implications, propose practical solutions, and summarise key insights. By analysing these elements, the essay highlights the need for balanced approaches that prioritise human welfare alongside technological advancement. The discussion is informed by academic sources, revealing both the potential benefits and limitations of AI in business contexts.
Ethical Controversies of AI in the Workplace
The adoption of AI in workplaces has sparked debates around several ethical issues, often stemming from its impact on employees and organisational practices. One major controversy is job displacement, where AI automation replaces human roles, leading to unemployment and economic inequality. For instance, in manufacturing and administrative sectors, AI-driven robots and software have automated repetitive tasks, arguably exacerbating social divides (Brynjolfsson and McAfee, 2014). This raises questions about fairness, as lower-skilled workers are disproportionately affected, while benefits accrue to corporations and shareholders.
Privacy invasion represents another ethical concern. AI systems, such as employee monitoring tools, collect vast amounts of personal data, potentially violating individual rights. In the UK, for example, the use of AI in surveillance has been scrutinised under the Data Protection Act 2018, with reports indicating that unchecked data collection can lead to discriminatory practices (Information Commissioner’s Office, 2020). Furthermore, algorithmic bias in AI hiring tools perpetuates discrimination based on gender, race, or age. Studies show that biased training data can result in unfair outcomes, such as Amazon’s recruitment AI favouring male candidates due to historical data patterns (Dastin, 2018). These controversies highlight the tension between efficiency gains and ethical responsibilities, where AI’s limitations in handling complex human contexts become evident.
Critically, while AI promises productivity, its application often lacks transparency, making it difficult for stakeholders to evaluate decisions. This opacity can erode trust in business operations, as employees may feel dehumanised by automated performance evaluations. Overall, these issues underscore the need for ethical frameworks to guide AI deployment, ensuring it aligns with societal values rather than solely profit motives.
Ethical Theories Applied to AI in the Workplace
To address these controversies, ethical theories provide a lens for evaluation. Utilitarianism, a consequentialist theory, assesses actions based on their outcomes, aiming to maximise overall happiness or utility for the greatest number (Mill, 1863). In the context of AI in the workplace, utilitarianism might justify automation if it leads to broader economic benefits, such as lower costs and innovation, benefiting society at large. For example, AI in logistics can optimise supply chains, reducing environmental impact and creating new jobs in tech sectors, thus promoting net positive utility (Brynjolfsson and McAfee, 2014). However, this approach has limitations; it may overlook the suffering of displaced workers, as the theory prioritises aggregate gains over individual harms. Critics argue that utilitarianism can rationalise inequality, where short-term job losses are deemed acceptable for long-term progress, potentially ignoring vulnerable groups.
In contrast, deontology emphasises duties and rules, focusing on the inherent rightness of actions regardless of consequences (Kant, 1785). From this perspective, deploying AI that invades privacy or discriminates violates fundamental duties to respect human dignity and autonomy. For instance, using AI surveillance without consent breaches the categorical imperative to treat individuals as ends, not means. Deontologists would argue for strict regulations, such as obtaining explicit employee consent for data use, to uphold moral absolutes. This theory critiques utilitarian oversights by insisting on universal principles, but it may hinder innovation if rigid rules prevent beneficial AI applications. Applying both theories reveals a balanced view: utilitarianism highlights efficiency, while deontology stresses moral obligations, together informing ethical AI practices in business.
These theories demonstrate a sound understanding of ethical foundations, though their applicability is limited by contextual factors, such as varying cultural norms in global workplaces.
Ethical Decision-Making Model for AI Dilemmas
An ethical decision-making model offers a structured approach to resolving AI-related controversies. The Ferrell and Fraedrich model, a seven-step framework, is particularly relevant in business ethics (Ferrell and Fraedrich, 2015). It begins with recognising the ethical issue, such as identifying bias in an AI hiring system. Step two involves gathering facts, like reviewing data sources for imbalances. The third step evaluates alternatives using ethical theories—utilitarianism might assess overall benefits, while deontology checks rule adherence.
Steps four and five involve making and testing the decision, perhaps by piloting a debiased AI tool and monitoring outcomes. The sixth step reflects on the decision’s impact, ensuring it aligns with stakeholder interests, and the final step modifies as needed. Applying this model to workplace AI, a company facing privacy concerns could systematically evaluate monitoring tools, leading to decisions that balance surveillance with employee rights. This model promotes logical problem-solving, drawing on evidence to address complexities, though it requires minimum guidance and assumes access to accurate data, which may not always be available in fast-paced business environments.
Critically, the model’s strength lies in its iterative nature, allowing for evaluation of multiple perspectives, but it may overlook power dynamics, such as managerial biases influencing fact-gathering.
Proposed Solutions
To mitigate ethical controversies, several solutions can be proposed, informed by the discussed theories and model. Firstly, implementing robust regulatory frameworks is essential. Governments, particularly in the UK, should enforce guidelines like those from the AI Council, mandating transparency in AI algorithms to reduce bias and enhance accountability (UK Government, 2021). For instance, requiring companies to conduct ethical audits using the Ferrell and Fraedrich model could ensure decisions respect deontological duties while maximising utilitarian benefits.
Secondly, businesses should invest in reskilling programmes to address job displacement. This aligns with utilitarian principles by creating net positive outcomes and deontological respect for human potential.

Additionally, employee involvement in AI governance, via unions or committees, ensures decisions reflect varied perspectives, enhancing trust.
These solutions demonstrate problem-solving by identifying key issues and applying specialist skills, though their success depends on organisational commitment and may face resistance from cost-focused businesses.
