However, the spread of misinformation—false or misleading content shared intentionally or otherwise—has raised significant concerns, particularly in areas like public health, politics, and social cohesion. This essay, written from the perspective of an English undergraduate studying media discourse and language in digital contexts, explores whether these platforms should be legally required to curb misinformation. It outlines the impacts of misinformation, arguments for and against mandatory interventions, and potential implications, drawing on academic and official sources to evaluate the debate. The discussion highlights the tension between free speech and societal harm, aiming to assess if regulation is a necessary step.
The Impact of Misinformation on Society
Misinformation on social media can have profound consequences, often amplifying through algorithms that prioritise engagement over accuracy. For instance, during the 2016 US presidential election, fake news stories outperformed real news on Facebook, influencing public opinion and potentially election outcomes (Allcott and Gentzkow, 2017). In the UK context, misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines led to hesitancy and public health risks, as false claims spread rapidly online. Wardle and Derakhshan (2017) define misinformation as part of a broader “information disorder,” including disinformation (deliberately false) and malinformation (true but harmful). This framework, developed for the Council of Europe, underscores how such content erodes trust in institutions and fosters division. From an English studies viewpoint, analysing the rhetorical strategies in viral posts—such as emotive language or sensational headlines—reveals how misinformation manipulates discourse, making it a critical issue for language scholars. However, while these impacts are evident, they do not automatically justify mandatory platform interventions, as some argue self-regulation could suffice.
Arguments for Requiring Platforms to Stop Misinformation
Proponents of regulation assert that social media companies have a responsibility to mitigate harm, given their role as gatekeepers of information. The UK’s Online Safety Act 2023, for example, mandates platforms to remove illegal content and protect users from harm, including misinformation that could incite violence or public disorder (UK Parliament, 2023). This legislation reflects a growing consensus that unchecked misinformation threatens democracy; indeed, the Act requires platforms to assess risks and implement measures like content moderation. Supporters, including researchers like Wardle and Derakhshan (2017), argue for interdisciplinary approaches, combining technology with policy to verify facts. From a media studies perspective, this could enhance digital literacy, encouraging users to critically evaluate sources.
