The statement, “In order to protect our nation, the Government should be able to block any content online that it deems inappropriate and access anyone’s smartphone,” sparks a contentious debate about the balance between security and individual freedoms. As an English student exploring the intersections of language, power, and technology, I argue in favour of granting the government such powers, provided they are exercised with transparency and accountability.
