Introduction
This essay reflects on my experiences during a two-week placement in an obstetrics unit as a nursing student. The purpose of this reflection is to evaluate my development in clinical skills, interpersonal communication, and understanding of patient-centered care within the context of maternal and neonatal health. Obstetrics, a critical field in nursing, demands both technical proficiency and emotional resilience due to the high-stakes nature of childbirth and postnatal care. This reflection will explore my initial challenges, key learning experiences, and the application of theoretical knowledge to practice, underpinned by relevant academic sources. The essay is structured into sections focusing on clinical skill development, emotional and ethical considerations, and professional growth, concluding with implications for my future practice.
Clinical Skill Development
During my placement, I had the opportunity to observe and assist in various clinical procedures, such as antenatal assessments and postnatal checks. Initially, I struggled with the technical aspects of monitoring fetal heart rates using a Doppler device, often feeling uncertain about interpreting the readings. However, with guidance from my mentor, I gradually became more confident. This mirrors findings by Bennett et al. (2017), who note that hands-on experience under supervision is crucial for skill acquisition in nursing education. Furthermore, I learned to document patient observations accurately, ensuring clarity for the multidisciplinary team. While my proficiency improved, I recognise that my limited exposure during this short placement restricted deeper mastery of complex skills, a limitation consistent with the constraints of undergraduate placements (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2018).
Emotional and Ethical Considerations
The emotional intensity of obstetrics was striking. Witnessing a complicated delivery where the mother experienced significant distress was particularly challenging. I felt a mix of empathy and helplessness, unsure how to provide comfort without overstepping professional boundaries. This experience highlighted the importance of emotional intelligence in nursing, as discussed by Smith (2015), who argues that empathetic communication can significantly enhance patient outcomes. Additionally, I encountered ethical dilemmas, such as respecting a patient’s cultural preferences during labour, even when they conflicted with standard protocols. Reflecting on this, I understood the need to balance individualised care with clinical guidelines, a perspective supported by the NHS’s commitment to patient-centered care (NHS England, 2019). These experiences, though intense, were vital in shaping my approach to compassionate nursing.
Professional Growth and Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Working alongside midwives, obstetricians, and other healthcare professionals provided insight into the importance of teamwork in obstetrics. I observed how effective communication within the team ensured swift responses during emergencies, aligning with research by Leonard et al. (2016), which underscores the role of collaborative practice in improving maternal safety. Indeed, participating in handover meetings taught me to articulate patient updates concisely, a skill I intend to refine further. However, I occasionally felt intimidated by the fast-paced environment, revealing a gap in my confidence that I must address. Generally, this placement reinforced the value of continuous learning and adaptability, key attributes for a competent nurse.

In conclusion, my two-week placement in obstetrics has been a transformative experience, enhancing my clinical skills, emotional resilience, and appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration. While challenges such as technical unfamiliarity and emotional strain were evident, they provided opportunities for growth and self-awareness.
