Introduction
This essay explores my deep-rooted passion for becoming an actuary, a profession that blends my love for mathematics with a commitment to addressing real-world uncertainties through risk assessment. It outlines three key aspects: my personal motivation for pursuing actuarial science, how my activities and experiences reflect determination and self-motivation, and my intended contributions to the mission of the International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA) and the broader field. Mathematics, to me, is not merely a subject but a profound tool for understanding and shaping the world, especially within economic contexts where risk plays a pivotal role. This essay will demonstrate my journey, skills, and aspirations, grounded in personal experiences and aligned with the values of the actuarial profession.
Personal Motivation for Actuarial Science
My fascination with mathematics began in childhood, despite significant early challenges. Unable to attend school initially, I relied on friends to share their lessons, finding mathematics both natural and exhilarating. Joining school later in Kenya, I excelled, particularly during my class 8 candidacy exam at age 13. Under my teacher’s guidance, I not only honed my skills but also tutored peers, learning the importance of communicating complex ideas simply—a skill vital for actuaries (Casualty Actuarial Society, 2020). Earning the highest math grade in my school reinforced my appreciation for rigour and effort. Although familial circumstances prevented high school attendance, I pursued self-education with resources like Khan Academy, inspired by Galileo’s view of mathematics as the language of the universe. This perspective solidified my belief in math’s power to quantify uncertainty, leading me to actuarial science—a field where mathematics meets economics to manage risk, an area I find profoundly impactful given today’s global uncertainties.
Determination and Self-Motivation Through Experiences
My journey reflects unwavering determination. After moving to America at 18 following my father’s passing, I balanced work with self-study in mathematics to prepare for college. Enrolling in community college, I found algebra an elegant dance of logic, confirming my career must involve mathematics. As co-founder and vice president of my school’s math club, I connect students with professional applications of math, driven by a desire to provide opportunities I once lacked. Additionally, I undertook an independent project on risk modelling for disaster impact in Sub-Saharan Africa, acquiring technical skills like Python, SQL, and statistical analysis—key for actuarial work (Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, 2021). My externship as a data analyst and volunteer role as a finance coach with the Women’s Resource of Greater Houston further honed my problem-solving and communication skills, essential for translating data into meaningful decisions. These experiences highlight my self-discipline and proactive approach to learning.
Contributing to IABA’s Mission and Actuarial Science
The IABA’s mission to increase diversity in the actuarial profession resonates deeply with me. As an African aspiring actuary, I aim to contribute by nurturing a pipeline of diverse talent, particularly from underrepresented communities. I plan to mentor young Africans interested in this field, leveraging my experiences to inspire and guide them. In the broader field, I seek to apply my mathematical skills and unique perspective to mitigate crises through informed risk assessment, especially in volatile economic and geopolitical contexts (IABA, 2023). Actuaries are pivotal in safeguarding economies against ripple effects of miscalculated risks, and I aspire to play a role in this, ensuring stability in an increasingly uncertain world driven by factors like AI and socioeconomic instability.
Conclusion
In summary, my journey from self-taught beginnings to pursuing actuarial science reflects a deep passion for mathematics and a commitment to managing risk in economic contexts. My determination is evident in overcoming personal challenges and actively seeking skill development through diverse roles and projects. Furthermore, I am dedicated to contributing to the IABA’s mission by fostering diversity and using my expertise to address global uncertainties. Becoming an actuary is not just a career goal but a means to create impact, blending analytical rigour with a vision for a more stable, inclusive future in the field.
