Introduction

As ICCT students, we often encounter vast amounts of digital information, from online databases to scholarly articles, which demands careful scrutiny to avoid misinformation. This essay discusses five key criteria for evaluating information sources: authority, accuracy, currency, relevance, and purpose. These criteria, drawn from established information literacy frameworks, help in assessing source quality, particularly in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. By examining each, the essay highlights their importance, supported by academic evidence, and considers their limitations in ICCT contexts.
Authority
Authority refers to the credibility of the source’s creator or publisher, which is crucial in ICCT where expertise can determine the trustworthiness of technical information. For instance, sources from recognised institutions or experts, such as peer-reviewed journals, are typically more reliable than anonymous blog posts. Metzger (2007) argues that evaluating authority involves checking the author’s qualifications, affiliations, and citations, as this mitigates risks of biased or unqualified content. In ICCT studies, this criterion is vital when sourcing data on cybersecurity threats; a report from a government body like the UK National Cyber Security Centre carries more weight than unverified online forums. However, authority can be limited by emerging experts in fast-paced fields, where traditional credentials may not fully capture innovative knowledge. Thus, while authority provides a foundational check, it should be combined with other criteria for comprehensive evaluation.
Accuracy
Accuracy assesses whether the information is correct, verifiable, and free from errors, which is particularly relevant in ICCT for technical specifications or data analysis. This involves cross-referencing facts with multiple sources and checking for evidence-based claims. According to Hilligoss and Rieh (2008), accuracy evaluation includes examining methodological rigor and the presence of citations, ensuring the source’s claims are supported. For example, in evaluating a source on artificial intelligence algorithms, one might verify if the described processes align with established standards like those from IEEE publications. Limitations arise in dynamic ICCT areas, such as software updates, where information can quickly become outdated. Nevertheless, accuracy fosters reliable application in problem-solving, such as debugging code based on verified tutorials.
Currency
Currency evaluates the timeliness of the information, ensuring it reflects the most recent developments, which is indispensable in ICCT given the rapid pace of technological advancements. Sources should be dated, and users must consider if the content remains relevant; for instance, a 2010 article on mobile technology may be obsolete today. As noted by Mandalios (2013), currency is critical in fields like ICCT, where outdated data on network protocols could lead to security vulnerabilities. An example is assessing sources on 5G implementation—preferring recent publications over older ones. Relevance

Purpose
Purpose examines the intent behind the source, identifying biases or agendas that could influence objectivity, essential in ICCT where commercial interests often intersect with information. Sources should be scrutinised for promotional content versus informative value.
