One such term, ‘debugging,’ is central to the process of programming and software development. During a recent lecture, we briefly discussed debugging, which prompted further exploration into its meaning and historical origins. This essay aims to provide a detailed examination of what debugging entails, where the term originated, when it was first used, and who is attributed with coining it. By delving into these aspects, I hope to gain a broader appreciation for this critical process in computing, supported by credible sources and presented in a clear, logical manner.

Debugging refers to the process of identifying, isolating, and fixing errors or ‘bugs’ in computer programs. These bugs can manifest as logical errors, syntax mistakes, or runtime issues that prevent software from functioning as intended. As a novice programmer, I have already encountered the frustration of code that fails to execute correctly, making debugging an invaluable skill. Typically, debugging involves systematically reviewing code, using tools such as debuggers, or employing techniques like print statements to trace the source of an error. Beyond merely correcting mistakes, debugging fosters a deeper understanding of how programs operate, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
