One big question that comes up is whether we should focus more on stuff like art, which helps us express ourselves and understand our feelings, or on science, which solves real-world problems and makes our lives better in practical ways. In my opinion, we should invest more in science because it directly improves our health, technology, and understanding of the world. This essay will explain why science deserves more attention and funding by looking at how it helps us in ways art can’t match, even though I know art is important too. I’ll talk about science solving big problems, making lives better, and why it’s a smarter choice for society right now.
The Urgent Need for Science to Solve Big Problems
First off, science is super important because it helps us deal with huge problems that affect everyone. Things like climate change, diseases, and food shortages are real dangers, and science gives us the tools to fight them. For example, scientists are working on cleaner energy sources like solar and wind power to stop global warming. According to a report by the UK government, renewable energy use has gone up a lot in the past few years, and this wouldn’t have happened without scientific research (Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, 2020). Art might make us feel inspired or help us think about these issues, but it doesn’t fix them directly like science does.
Also, think about health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists made vaccines super fast, which saved tons of lives. The World Health Organization says that vaccines have stopped millions of deaths from diseases over the years (WHO, 2021). Sure, art can help people feel better emotionally, like when we draw or listen to music to relax, but it’s not gonna cure a virus. Science tackles these life-or-death issues, and I think that’s why we gotta put more money into labs and research instead of just galleries or theaters.
Science Improves Everyday Life
Another reason we should invest in science is that it makes our day-to-day lives better in ways we sometimes don’t even notice. Think about phones, computers, and the internet—none of that would exist without science. These things help us stay connected, learn new stuff, and even get jobs. A book I read about technology said that scientific discoveries in the last 100 years have totally changed how humans live, more than any other field (Brynjolfsson and McAfee, 2014). I mean, I use my phone every day to talk to friends or look up homework answers, and that’s all thanks to scientists, not artists.
Even stuff like clean water and better food comes from science. Engineers and researchers figure out how to clean water so we don’t get sick, and they’ve made farming better so more people can eat. Art can be pretty to look at or fun to make, but it doesn’t keep us fed or healthy like science does. I’m not saying art isn’t cool—I love drawing sometimes—but if we have to pick where to put more money, science just seems like the thing that helps everyone the most.
Long-Term Benefits of Investing in Science
Furthermore, putting money into science isn’t just about fixing stuff right now; it’s about making the future better too. Research today can lead to discoveries we can’t even imagine yet. For instance, space exploration, which a lot of people think is a waste of money, has actually given us things like satellite tech that helps with weather forecasts and GPS (UK Space Agency, 2019). Who knows what else we could find out there if we keep funding science? Maybe ways to live on other planets or solve energy problems forever.
Art can show us history or make us think about the future, but science builds that future. If we don’t invest in research, we might miss out on huge discoveries that could save the planet or make life easier. I get that art can inspire scientists sometimes, like cool designs or stories, but inspiration isn’t enough if there’s no money for actual experiments or equipment. So, I think society should focus on science to make sure we’re ready for whatever comes next.
Why Art, Though Important, Takes a Back Seat
Now, I don’t want to sound like I hate art or think it’s useless. I actually enjoy painting and reading stories, and I know art helps people understand different cultures and express feelings. It can even help with mental health, like when music calms someone down. A study I found said that art programs in schools help kids build creativity and confidence (Smith, 2016). That’s awesome, but the thing is, art doesn’t solve the bigger, scarier problems we face as a whole society.
Plus, art often depends on science anyway. Like, digital art needs computers, and movies need cameras and special effects—all from science. So, if we don’t fund science, even art might struggle. I feel like we can still support art, maybe through schools or local programs, but when it comes to big investments, science has to come first because it’s the foundation for so much else. It’s kind of a tough choice, but I think it’s the right one.

To wrap it all up, I believe society should invest more in science than in art, even though art matters a lot too. Science helps us solve giant problems like climate change and diseases, makes our everyday lives better with tech and stuff like clean water, and sets us up for a stronger future with new discoveries. Art is great for feelings and creativity, but it doesn’t have the same wide impact that science does. If we don’t put money into research and experiments, we might not be able to handle the challenges coming our way. So, in my view, focusing on science is the smarter move for now. It doesn’t mean forgetting art, but just making sure we’ve got our priorities straight. Hopefully, in the future, we can balance both, but right now, science feels like the urgent need. I think if more people thought about this, they’d see why science deserves the bigger investment.
