King Henry VIII was born on June 28, 1491, in Greenwich which is near London, he was the second son of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York so he wasnt supposed to be king at first but his older brother Arthur died young, that made Henry the heir. His family was the Tudor dynasty which started after the Wars of the Roses a big civil war in England, Henry VII won at Bosworth Field in 1485 and thats how they got the throne. Growing up Henry was educated really well, he learned languages like Latin and French, music, theology, and sports too he was athletic and tall about 6 feet something which was impressive back then. By todays standards maybe not so much but in the 1500s it showed strength, his early life was stable because his dad secured the kingdom but there was always threats from pretenders. According to Scarisbrick he was prepared for rule but not originally for the crown which shaped him (Scarisbrick, 1968). This background made him ambitious I think, coming from a new dynasty he wanted to prove himself.
Specific Beliefs of Henry VIII
Henry VIII had beliefs that mixed Catholic traditions with some new ideas, he was devout at first even writing a book against Martin Luther called Assertio Septem Sacramentorum in 1521 which got him the title Defender of the Faith from the Pope, that shows he believed in the seven sacraments and papal authority initially. But his beliefs shifted when he wanted a divorce from Catherine of Aragon because she couldnt give him a son, he thought it was against the Bible or something from Leviticus about marrying your brother’s wife since Catherine was Arthur’s widow. He believed in the divine right of kings meaning kings get power from God not the Pope, and he saw himself as head of the church in England.
