While some advocate for a complete ban, others see potential benefits if properly regulated. Acknowledging opposing views, such as those who argue LAWS save lives by protecting soldiers, this essay contends that unless there is a major reconstruction of legal frameworks, LAWS cannot be ethically integrated into modern warfare due to the undermining of meaningful human accountability.

The emergence of LAWS as a pressing issue stems from their deployment in ongoing conflicts, highlighting urgent ethical and legal challenges. In the Russia-Ukraine war, for instance, autonomous drones have been used in ways that blur the lines between combatant and civilian targets, with reports of systems pursuing disarmed individuals (Human Rights Watch, 2023). These weapons, equipped with swarm modes and target-locking capabilities, operate with minimal human oversight, leading to incidents where surrendered soldiers are chased and killed, arguably violating international humanitarian law (International Committee of the Red Cross, 2021).
