This essay, written from the perspective of an English 3 student exploring media literacy and rhetoric, examines whether social media platforms should be legally required to stop misinformation. It will outline the impacts of misinformation, present arguments for and against mandatory intervention, and evaluate these perspectives. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted misinformation’s dangers, with false claims about vaccines leading to hesitancy and higher infection rates (Wardle and Derakhshan, 2017). These examples demonstrate how misinformation undermines trust in institutions and exacerbates societal divisions. From an English studies viewpoint, this distorts rhetorical practices, as persuasive language is weaponised without factual grounding, challenging traditional notions of truth in communication.
