Introduction
This essay outlines my vision and goals as a future Physician Associate (PA), drawing on personal insights and academic literature to emphasise patient-centred care, collaborative practice, and service to diverse communities. In the context of modern healthcare, where PAs play an increasingly vital role in addressing workforce shortages and improving access to services (Health Education England, 2020), I aim to contribute meaningfully by ensuring patients feel heard and respected. Key points include fostering empathetic consultations, promoting team-based care, and targeting underserved populations, ultimately aiming for equitable health outcomes. This vision aligns with broader healthcare priorities, such as those outlined in NHS strategies for inclusive practice.
Vision for Patient-Centred Care
My core vision as a PA is to ensure every patient leaves consultations feeling genuinely heard, respecting their unique cultural backgrounds and lived experiences. This approach recognises that patients often possess intuitive knowledge about their own bodies, which can enhance diagnostic accuracy when integrated into clinical decision-making. As noted by Stewart et al. (2014), patient-centred care improves satisfaction and health outcomes by prioritising the individual’s perspective over purely biomedical models. Indeed, dismissing patient concerns due to time pressures or assumptions can exacerbate health inequalities, particularly in diverse populations.
In practice, I intend to apply this by actively listening and avoiding ego-driven interactions, even when cultural differences challenge relatability. For instance, working in multicultural settings, I would draw on evidence from qualitative studies showing that culturally sensitive communication reduces non-adherence to treatment (Betancourt et al., 2003). The impact I hope to achieve includes empowered patients who feel supported, leading to better self-management of conditions and reduced healthcare disparities. This is especially relevant in the UK, where ethnic minorities often report feeling overlooked in clinical encounters (NHS England, 2022).
Goals for Collaborative Practice and Diverse Service
Another key goal is to foster collaborative healthcare environments, acknowledging that effective care relies on interdisciplinary teams including nurses, technicians, and social workers. Hierarchical systems can demotivate staff, whereas inclusive leadership enhances outcomes, as evidenced by research on team dynamics in primary care (Reeves et al., 2017). As a PA, I plan to value every team member’s contributions, drawing from my experiences to create respectful workplaces that prioritise patient wellbeing.
I am particularly drawn to practice areas in public or community hospitals, serving diverse and underserved populations facing barriers like socioeconomic deprivation. These settings allow for broad patient interactions, from general medicine to chronic disease management, aligning with my interest in equitable access. Furthermore, I aim to volunteer in free clinics, building on pre-PA experiences to provide care where it is most needed. This reflects goals in public health literature, which highlights the role of PAs in addressing health inequities in low-resource communities (World Health Organization, 2016).
Desired Impact and Outcomes
Ultimately, by combining clinical expertise with humility and compassion, I hope to achieve outcomes where medicine transcends diagnosis to encompass holistic support. This could manifest in improved patient trust, better adherence rates, and advocacy for systemic changes, such as enhanced funding for community health initiatives. Through these efforts, I envision contributing to a more inclusive healthcare system, reducing burdens on vulnerable groups and promoting long-term wellbeing.
