The VA industry has experienced exponential growth, with global market penetration projected to reach over 8 billion devices by 2025 (Statista, 2023). This surge is largely attributed to innovations in AI, particularly in speech emotion recognition, which enables VAs to interpret user emotions and respond with tailored interactions (Choi & Agichtein, 2020). Such advancements, while enhancing user experience, raise questions about the environmental footprint of VA devices. The production, operation, and disposal of these technologies contribute to e-waste and carbon emissions, necessitating robust sustainability reporting to track and mitigate these impacts. Indeed, companies like Amazon have begun disclosing energy usage data for Alexa devices, though critics argue that comprehensive lifecycle assessments remain limited (Smith & Pal, 2020).
ESG Challenges: Data Privacy and Social Impact
From a social perspective, the integration of VAs into sectors such as customer service and healthcare offers transformative potential but also amplifies ESG-related risks, particularly concerning data privacy. The collection of sensitive user information, including emotional and behavioural data, has sparked debates over consent and security (Lim, 2025). For instance, high-profile data breaches have highlighted the vulnerability of VA systems, prompting calls for stricter regulations. In the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has emphasised the need for transparency in AI data usage, aligning with broader ESG principles of accountability (ICO, 2022). Furthermore, the potential for job displacement, especially in regions reliant on human-centric industries like the Philippines’ outsourcing sector, underscores the social governance challenges that must be addressed through stakeholder-inclusive sustainability frameworks.
Opportunities for Sustainable Innovation
Despite these challenges, the VA industry presents opportunities for sustainable innovation. Companies can leverage AI to optimise energy efficiency in smart home systems, reducing household carbon footprints. Moreover, adopting circular economy principles—such as designing VAs for recyclability—could mitigate e-waste concerns (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2021). Arguably, sustainability reporting frameworks, such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), provide a mechanism for VA developers to disclose environmental and social impacts transparently, fostering trust and accountability among consumers and regulators alike. However, the application of such frameworks remains inconsistent across the industry, indicating a need for standardisation.
