Public management is no walk in the park, as you now know. It is complex, affected by various factors both within and beyond the control of the agency or its managers. But, just for kicks, the last 40-50 years has been witness to a tectonic shift from formal, closed, rigid government bureaucracy to informal, open, flexible governance. In a nutshell, we work together–across agencies, levels of government, and even sectors. Government can no longer achieve its outcomes unilaterally, but requires the efforts of private and nonprofit partners, as well as other governments. Society may benefit, but the public manager faces greater frustration in the face of far less direct control over outcomes. And, of course, citizens now demand outcomes and seek to hold agencies responsible. Your challenge in this final discussion post is to identify a network, collaboration, or partnership seeking to carry out a public purpose or achieve a public goal.
