As I reflect on my life and my most recent post in the dicussion for class My Dominant Social Identites are gender, ability, and age. Gender being a female, mother and wife. Age being I am a 37 year old, and Ability, I am a nutruer but also have been diagnosed with anxiety, ADHD, and I am also on the spectrum. My gender directly shapes my daily expiernces bcause I am a female who is a mother first and foremost. My children depend on me daily, this is where my nutruing identity comes in, not only do i love to care for other things outside of my home I am constantly caring for my family. Laundry, dishes, packing lunches, sweeping floors, school, dinner, practices, the list goes on, but is me who remembers who likes pepporini on their pizza and who doesnt, who has monday practice, and who has a birthday party to attend. Growing up my mm did it all, but also in my household their were very big gender roles set at a young age. The man my father did the hard work or so called manly duties. Take the trash out, mow the lawn, fix the car, change the oil, fill up the gas. The women, my mother on the other hand raise the children, do the laundry, cook dinner, keep the house, growing up and seeing this I can see where it shaped me in some of the ways I am today. I can also see where I take on so much in my home even though my husband doesnt believe in gender roles in the home, he was raised by a single mother so doing dishes does not bother him. He is so quick to pick up housework after he gets off work and help me. However because of the way I was raised I often feel not accomplished when I dont do these things in our home or if my husband does them, however I am teaching my boys that not just women can do the housework and that they need to be able to do these duties as well. I dont want them to conform to their social idenites being gender role based.
