While contemporary television series like Euphoria (2019–present) and Pose (2018–2021) are often celebrated for “breaking barriers” in queer and gender-nonconforming representation, these changes are more aesthetic than fundamental. This essay will argue that while the visibility of sexual difference has increased, the underlying narrative structures still rely on “tragic queer” tropes and the commodification of identity to appeal to a mainstream, cisnormative audience. By analyzing these two series, I will illustrate that the economics of “prestige TV” limit how much gender representation can actually evolve.
